Biggar Archaeology completed a survey of gravestone location at Kirkurd Old graveyard in the grounds of Castle Craigs Hospital in Peeblesshire. The site has been occupied by successive churches from as early as the 12th century, when the church of ‘Orde’ first comes on record, to 1766, when the present church building was erected in Kirkurd village (NT 1276 4426). The only surviving structure is a roughly built cell, now mostly covered with earth and tree roots.  Ten of the original stones in the associated burial ground are extant.

A database was completed using Discovering England’s Burial Spaces (sic) guidelines. A detailed plan of the gravestones was completed and inscriptions reviewed follow the survey by Sheila Scott in 1971.

We gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of Castle Craig Hospital management from whom permission should be sought if visiting the site.
